NGO Training, Workshops and Capacity Building

Practical training for the people who keep programmes running

Training and Workshops explained

Most organisations do not fail because of a lack of commitment; they fail because of gaps in the systems behind the programmes. Our training is designed for the people who actually hold those systems: finance officers, programme managers, board members and field staff who need practical tools they can use the following week, not theory they cannot apply.

We deliver this service across 8 countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, working from our office in Nairobi.

Who this is for

  • Small and medium NGOs strengthening their internal systems
  • Board members and trustees new to nonprofit governance
  • Finance and programme staff managing donor-funded projects
  • Groups preparing for their first institutional donor requirements

Training areas we cover

Core modules include governance and board responsibilities, financial management and internal controls, budgeting and donor compliance, fundraising and proposal writing, monitoring and evaluation, safeguarding and child protection, grant and partnership management, and communications and public profile.

Each module is delivered as a workshop with your own documents on the table. Teams bring their budget, their log frame or their social media pages and work on them during the session, so the output is a better version of their own material rather than a set of slides.

How the workshops are delivered

Sessions can be run at our offices in Nairobi, at your premises, or as short remote workshops for dispersed teams. We cap in-person group sizes so that everyone works on their own material with direct feedback, and we follow up after the workshop to check what has been implemented.

For networks, umbrella bodies and county or district offices, we also run combined workshops for several organisations at once, which is an efficient way to raise standards across a whole local sector and encourage peer learning afterwards.

Capacity building that is documented

Donors increasingly ask what institutional strengthening an organisation has undertaken. Every participant receives a written certificate of attendance and a workshop report summarising the topics covered and the actions agreed.

Organisations can reference that documentation in proposals and due diligence submissions, and we can publish a note about the training in the directory so partners can see the areas where the organisation has invested in its own systems.

What you receive

  • Training needs assessment with your team
  • Tailored workshop content using your own documents
  • In-person, on-site or remote delivery
  • Certificates of attendance and a written workshop report

Training and Workshops: common questions

Do you train individuals or whole teams?

Both. Team workshops are usually more effective because the whole group leaves with the same understanding, and we also run open sessions for individuals and networks.

Where do the workshops take place?

In Nairobi at our offices, at your premises anywhere in the region, or remotely for teams that are spread across several countries. We agree the format with you before booking.

Will participants receive documentation?

Yes. Every participant receives a certificate and the organisation receives a written report, both of which can be used as evidence of capacity building in donor submissions.
